2007 Brunswick Varsity Lanes Open (August 5, 2007)

Two veterans kicked off the new season on Sunday August 5th by claiming victories in the 2007 JTBA Brunswick Varsity Lanes Open. We’d like to thank Jay Young and Brunswick for the generosity in sponsoring this event, and by adding $1000 to the scholarship fund. Also thanks especially to the staff at Varsity for their hospitality during the weekend. We look forward to returning next season.

Ashley StahurskiAshley StahurskiOn the ladies side, Joy Arrigo of Westerville, OH led the 6 game qualifying round at +13. By virtue of that performance, Arrigo was also our Junior Gold Qualifier for the event, and will represent the JTBA at the 2008 Championship event in Detroit MI. In match play, it was Ashley Stahurski of Bexley OH who marched through the bracket from the 4th seed, defeating Mary Wells of Westerville in the title match 2-0. Wells punched her ticket to the finals with a victory of Heidi Sanders over Fremont in the semi-finals, while Stahurski defeated Arrigo. Stahurski earned a $210 scholarship for her victory, while Wells took home $130 for second.

Tim PfeiferTim PfeiferIn the boy’s division, it was a Michigan invasion of Ohio, led by Eric Bracken of Brighton MI who led qualifying at +39. There were four bowlers plus, as James Koss, Brian McMahon and Trey Raynes all joined Bracken in averaging over 200. Thanks to his performance in qualifying, Bracken earned his spot for the 2008 Jr. Gold Championships, as did Tim Pfeifer and Paul Benedict. Once match play began, it was Tim Pfeifer who went undefeated in match play, defeating Paul Benedict of Wyandote MI in the finals. Benedict defeated last years Championships winner John Kaashoek of Jenison MI in the semi-finals 2-1 to advance. Pfeifer defeated Bracken 2-0 in the other semi-final. For their efforts, Pfeifer took home a $615 scholarship, Benedict $360, Bracken $260, and Kaashoek $210.

We’d like to thank everyone for their support in our season opener. Special thanks go to Jay Young and Varsity Lanes, also to Randy Hart for his assistance with the lane conditions for the event, as well as the folks at Brunswick for their support of this event, as well as the coupons for JTBA Members this season. Our next event will be the Isaly’s Championship to be held at Fred Borden’s Stonehedge Place in Akron on August 19th. Looking further down the road, we will make our annual trek to Dayton for the Junior Gold Qualifying Tournament hosted by Midwest USA Scholarship Events on Saturday September 8th, and then the JTBA Dayton Open on Sunday the 9th.
