The 30th Annual JTBA Championship Tournament concluded the JTBA’s highly successful 30th Anniversary Season with Michigan’s Aaron Lorincz and Westerville’s Mary Wells capturing the prestigious titles, heightened scholarship prizes, and also our Championship Clocks. Congratulations to them and all of our participants on a great season!
Looking to build on the success off our 30th Anniversary Year, we are prepared to make a few more changes moving forward. First, more tournaments will use the format we employed at our 30th Anniversary Championship. This longer format, with more players advancing to the semi-final round, was well received, and will appear at almost half of our events this season. In addition, our annual trip to Beaver Vu-Bowl has been moved to Labor Day weekend, both to avoid a conflict with MJMA, and also in hopes that having Monday off from work or school will encourage more athletes to travel for that event. Sport Certifying our events was also a success, and we will continue that into this season, and begin using a number of the WTBA patterns for competition this year.
Most notable of this year’s changes is the new schedule we have put together. With each season comes changes, and this year we are proud to announce several new host centers to our tour. The season will kick off on August 8th once again at Jay Young’s Varsity Lanes in Bowling Green. We will once again be sharing this opening weekend with MJMA, as their opener will be held in Belleville MI at Lodge Lanes on Saturday August 7th, and we expect a large turnout for our season opener once again this year. The JTBA will take a one week break, and then return to Fred Borden’s Stonehedge Place for our first Isaly’s sponsored event of the year in Akron OH on August 22nd . As mentioned previously, our annual trip to Beaver Vu Bowl will be Labor Day weekend, with the Midwest USA Eliminator being held Saturday September 4th, and our event, this year sponsored by Wright State University, on September 5th. See www.daytonbowling.com for more information on the Eliminator.
Two weeks later on September 26th we will head back to Dayton for our first new stop of the season. Proprietor Mike Irwin’s Capri Lanes has undergone a huge renovation project in the last several years, and will host the Urbana University Open. This event is occurring the day after 64 collegiate teams participate in an AHIBC Conference Match in Dayton, and we are optimistic that a large number of those participants will stick around for Sunday’s event.
From there it is back to Sequoia Pro Bowl in Columbus for the Isaly’s Championship on October 10th. Later that month, on Halloween Day we will have our annual Adult-Youth Championships at Southwyck Lanes in Toledo. This is one of our most popular event, and we look forward to seeing all of the great adult bowlers who come out to support our youth athletes that day.
Another change for this season sees the annual Sport Bowling Challenge move from September to November, and transitioning to a two day event, with a new double elimination match play format similar to the USBC Masters and Queens. 8 games of qualifying will be rolled on Saturday November 14th, with our finalists returning Sunday for the double elimination bracket. In addition, this event will, for the first time ever, feature the dual lane conditioning made popular in international competition, and recently, on the PBA tour.
From there we will take a break for Ohio High School Bowling, but for those of you not located in Ohio, or not bowling high school, we once again this year have a number of “out of Ohio” non-points events scheduled for the break. The first of which will be held in Pittsburgh at New Great Valley Lanes on December 12th, and New Great Valley will be adding to the scholarship pot for that event. We also have the 3rd Annual Isaly’s Pittsburgh Youth Masters scheduled for January 16th at Nesbit’s Lanes.
We return to regular season competition March 27th with the Kaye Bowling and Trophy/Sunrise Bowl Open at Sunrise Bowl in Zanesville. April 10th will send us back to Lorain once again for our annual Youth Doubles event, before we head off to another new stop on May 1st. Glass Bowl Lanes will be taking the place of what last year was a second Southwyck event, traditionally hosted by the now defunct Imperial Lanes. We thank Sherri and her crew at Southwyck for generously stepping up to take this event last year, and we look forward to working with the folks at Glass Bowl this year.
The regular season wraps up with a visit to PBA Hall of Famer Wayne Webb’s newly remodeled facility in Columbus on May 22nd. Wayne’s Columbus Bowl is currently being completely remodeled, and will be done in plenty of time for our arrival. We look forward to seeing the completed project, and to wrapping up our regular season there.
Championships weekend will be June 3rd and 4th, and will be held at Phil Baker’s Southwest Bowl for the 4th consecutive season. Mr. Baker and his staff have proven to be outstanding hosts during the past 3 seasons, and will certainly continue that in 2011.
We look forward to seeing all of you in Bowling Green on August 8th. For those who have competed in their final JTBA event as a youth player, we thank you for your support throughout the years, and hope to see you at our Adult-Junior Championship in October. Our initial mailing should reach mailboxes by July 15th. Anyone with questions, or would like more information may call the JTBA Office at (724) 779-9875, or email cpfeifer@jtba.com
