29th JTBA Championship Tournament (05/30-5/31/2009)On May 30 and 31, 2009 the JTBA’s 29th Championship Tournament returned to Phil Baker’s Southwest Bowl in beautiful Urbana, OH where 49 of JTBA’s best spent 2 days trying to win the coveted Championship clocks and hefty scholarship awards. Thanks go out once again to Phil and Jess, and their entire staff for once again providing a very professional atmosphere for this event. Everything ran smoothly and the amenities were no less than outstanding. First, the JTBA would like to thank the members and also the parents for a great year and we look forward to next season with all the changes that will be taking place. There will be a mailing in July with all the details on the rule changes and age restrictions. Also keep an eye on jtba.com for all the information. 11 girls battled through 12 games of qualifying on Saturday for the right to one of the top six spots for Sunday’s match play. At the end of the day JTBA Bowler of the Year and 7 time JTBA Champion Joy Arrigo of Westerville OH was the leader at +8, Heidi Sanders of Fremont, OH was 2nd, 3rd Sarah Germano of Rochester, NY, 4th was Mary Wells of Westerville, OH 5th went to Seanna Bell of Pittsburgh, PA with 3 time winner and Rookie of the Year Felicia Goll of St. Clair Shores, MI claiming the final spot for Sunday. When the dust settled from 12 games of match play 07-08 Rookie of the Year Mary Wells held the lead after besting Arrigo in the 12th game position round 185-165. In the first match of our stepladder finals Sanders struck too many times as Bell had some unfortunate stubborn 10 pins with Sanders moving on 207-171. Arrigo was up next to face Sanders and as always, Arrigo was steady tossing key doubles to get to the final 202-173. The championship match was classic seesaw battle with both Joy and Mary having spare trouble. Joy making the key shots down the stretch however, to take home the clock 167-161 and the $600 dollars in scholarships. 38 boys started Saturday with the hope of making the top 12 for match play on Sunday. Jon Schiller of Milford, MI leading both 6 game blocks at +118. Moving on were Schiller, Adam Jablonski, Bobby Bures, Garrett Gauthier, Paul Benedict, Jay Foote, Josh Jablonski, Aaron Morgan, Dean Reynolds, Jimmy Cheff, Jamie Robinson, and Greg Patz. Sunday’s matchplay saw Bures of Mentor, OH winning 7 of 12 matches with 3 games over 250 to take the lead, followed by Adam Jablonski of Sterling Heights, MI, Schiller, Garrett Gauthier Lapeer, MI and Paul Benedict of Wyandotte, MI in 5th. Three players had a chance in game 12 to get the 5th spot in the stepladder finals. Benedict defeated Gauthier in the first stepladder game 213-189 to face a redhot Schiller who threw the back 8 strikes for a 242-210 victory. Next up JTBA Bowler of the Year Adam Jablonski saw his matchplay woes continue, as Schiller threw back 7 for a 206-176 win. Next up, Schiller took the excitement out of the final by striking on his first 7 shots for a 255-202 clock securing victory. Once again Tim, Carl, Jason and Carol would like to thank everyone for the success of the JTBA in 2008-2009. Also to The Isaly Company, ABI Phone Systems, Pepsi, Park Lanes Mansfield, Brunswick, Varsity Lanes, Imperial Lanes, Bravo Pizza, Southwest Bowl, Weber Insurance, and of course USBC for their support of the JTBA.
